യൂറോപ്യന്‍ പാര്‍ലമെന്റിലേക്കു നടത്തിയ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിലും ജര്‍മനിയിലെയും ഓസ്ട്രിയയിലെയും പൊതു തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളിലും തീവ്ര വലതുപക്ഷ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തിയ അഭൂതപൂര്‍വമായ മുന്നേറ്റങ്ങളുടെ കൂടി പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലാണ് ഉച്ചകോടിയില്‍ കുടിയേറ്റ മുഖ്യ ചര്‍ച്ചാവിഷയമാകുന്നത്. കുടിയേറ്റ വിരുദ്ധത മുഖമുദ്രയാക്കിയാണ് തീവ്ര വലതുപക്ഷക്കാര്‍ സമൂഹത്തില്‍ വേരോട്ടം നടത്തുന്നത് എന്നതു തന്നെ കാരണം.

അതേസമയം, അനധികൃതമായി യൂറോപ്യന്‍ യൂണിയന്റെ അതിര്‍ത്തി കടക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണത്തില്‍ ഈ വര്‍ഷം നാല്‍പ്പതു ശതമാനം കുറവ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നതും വസ്തുതയാണ്. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം പത്തു വര്‍ഷത്തിനിടയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന തലത്തിലെത്തിയ ശേഷമാണ് ഈ ഇടിവ്.

കുടിയേറ്റ പ്രശ്നത്തിനു പ്രായോഗിക പരിഹാരങ്ങളാണ് ആവശ്യമെന്ന് ഉച്ചകോടിക്കു മുന്നോടിയായി ഇറ്റലിയിലെ തീവ്ര വലതുപക്ഷക്കാരിയായ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ജോര്‍ജിയ മെലോനി അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. അനധികൃത കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരെ അല്‍ബേനിയയിലേക്ക് അയയ്ക്കുന്ന വിവാദപരമായ കരാറിന് ഇറ്റലി മധ്യസ്ഥം വഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. യൂറോപ്യന്‍ യൂണിയനു പുറത്ത് ഇത്തരം ഡിറ്റന്‍ഷന്‍ സെന്ററുകള്‍ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിന് ജര്‍മനി അടക്കമുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ എതിരാണ്.
